Pursuing the Female Orgasm
The female orgasm is a subject that does not receive much serious publicity, it is largely misunderstood and remains a mystery to majority of people including medical professionals. According to several major surveys, only 25 per cent of women always climax during sex with a partner. For majority of women orgasm is elusive, with it occurring infrequently or in many cases never occurring at all.
For many women who cannot achieve orgasm it becomes a source of anxiety and embarrassment with many believing that there’s something wrong with them if they can’t climax to order. This sense of abnormality only serves to heighten the problem and a sense of despair is often felt by women when they feel that there is nowhere to turn for help.
The media portrays women in books, films and magazine articles as being in a constant state of arousal and being able to enjoy the full throws of sexual ecstasy at any given time. Full throttle female orgasms are a mainstay of modern films, which serves to heighten a feeling of inadequacy and abnormality in women that cannot reach orgasm.
In the West female sexual dysfunction did not receive much attention until relatively recently. Anorgasmia, or the inability of women to achieve orgasm, was never seen as a problem in the male-focused culture of the past. Although we have moved on from the Victorian age where women were expected to do their ‘duty’ and satisfy and pleasure their husbands and bear children and not to be the reciprocates of pleasure; little has changed in the treatment of women who suffer sexual dysfunction. Women who are not able to achieve orgasm often still resign themselves to lives of frustration, depression, and sexual disillusion.
As stated before, anorgasmia is clinically defined as being the inability of women to achieve orgasm, even with adequate stimulation. The emphasis is often placed on the physical with strings of articles appearing on physical techniques to stimulate the clitoris and achieve the desired orgasm, all of which serve to heighten the problem as the real causes often stemming from psychological, social, cultural, religious, and emotional or relationship variables are left overlooked.
The feelings of depression, inadequacy and unfulfilled that often accompany a woman’s inability to achieve orgasm generally impacts on all areas of her life especially her intimate relationships.
